A SURVEY TO ASSESS THE INITIATION OF BREASTFEEDING AMONG POSTNATAL MOTHERS
Keywords:
Early initiation, breast feeding, postnatal mother, time of initiation, exploratory surveyAbstract
Early initiation of breastfeeding, within one hour of birth, protects the newborn from
acquiring infection and reduces newborn mortality. It facilitates emotional bonding of the
mother and the baby and has a positive impact on duration of exclusive breastfeeding. This
study aims to assess the initiation of breastfeeding among postnatal mothers, highlighting
factors influencing breastfeeding initiation and identifying potential areas for intervention. A
sample of postnatal mothers was surveyed to gather data on breastfeeding practices, maternal
demographics, and perceived barriers to breastfeeding initiation. Objectives of the study were:
1. To elicit time of initiation of breastfeeding in terms of minutes after birth. 2. To identify the
gaps in early initiation of breastfeeding. 3. To assess factor influencing early initiation of
breastfeeding
