Introduction: Pregnancy is a special time for a woman and her family. It is a time of
many changes in a pregnant woman’s body and emotions. Pregnancy stress can have
major negative effects on the mother, fetus and the newborn. Methods: A quasi
experimental two group pretest post-test design research design was adopted in this
study. A total of 50 primigravida mothers ( 25 for study group and 25 for control group)
between 28 to 30 weeks of gestation were selected by using convenience sampling
technique. The pretest data were collected based on demographic variables, obstetrical
variables, clinical variables by using structured interview schedule and the level of
stress and the level of anxiety was assessed by using standardized questionnaire. The
investigator taught the mothers about Garbha Sanskar intervention ( music therapy) for
the mother who fulfilled the inclusion criteria. The mothers were advised to practice at
home daily for 3 times ( morning, noon and evening) daily till 37 weeks of gestation.
The post test was conducted at the end of 37 weeks of gestation by using the same
questionnaire. Results: The results revealed that ,more than half of the mother 60% of
study group and 52% of control group were belonged to the age group of 23-27 years.
Nearly 40% of study group and 56% of control group mothers had high school
education. Majority, 76% of study group and 68% of control group mothers were
Hindus. Nearly 40% of study group and 36% of control group mothers were from sub
urban areas. Nearly, 40% of study group and 48% of control group mothers were in 28
30 weeks of gestation. Regarding the level of stress and anxiety, the pretest mean level
of stress was 120.2 ± 10.83 and the post test mean stress was reduced to 53.8± 7.90,
whereas in control group, the pretest mean level of stress was 121.92 ± 9.46 and the
post test level of mean score was 94.69 ± 12.93. There was positive non- significant
correlation ( p value - >0.05) between the level of stress and anxiety among
primigravida mothers in study group . There was a negative non- significant coorelation
( p value > -0.05)between the stress and anxiety among primigravida mothers in control
group. There was no significant association of post test level of stress among
primigravida mothers with their selected demographic and obstetrical variables in study
group and control group. There was a significant association of post test level of anxiety
among primigravida mothers with their selected demographic variables in terms of
education of the mother and other variables were found non-significant. Conclusion:
Mild to moderate level of stress and anxiety was observed among the primigravida mothers.
Garbha Sanskar intervention (music therapy) was found effective in reducing
the level of stress and anxiety among primigravida mothers.
