SPORTS COMPETITION ANXIETY AND SPORTS ACHIEVEMENT MOTIVATION AMONG FOOTBALL PLAYERS OF DHANAMANJURI UNIVERSITY, MANIPUR: A CORRELATION STUDY

Abstract

This study aims to identify Sports Competition Anxiety and its relationship
with sports achievement motivation among the Inter-University Football Players of
Dhanamanjuri University, Manipur. To achieve this, the study was conducted on a
purposively selected sample of twenty-two (n=22) inter-university football players of
Dhanamanjuri University, Manipur who have represented the All India Inter University
Tournament 2024-2025. The Sports Competition Anxiety Test, created by Martins et al.
in 1977 was used to measure Sports Competition Anxiety, and M.L. Kamlesh's Sports
Achievement Motivation Questionnaire (1993) was used to measure Achievement
Motivation. The researcher uses the Pearson Correlation test to find out the correlation
between Sports Competition Anxiety and Achievement Motivation. The result revealed
that there was statistical significance as the p-value is 0.46 which is less than the 0.05
level of significance and there is a negative correlation between Sports Competition
Anxiety and sports achievement motivation (r=-0.429) among football players of
Dhanamanjuri University. The results showed a statistically significant difference and
there is a negative correlation between Sports Competition Anxiety and sports
achievement motivation among players. The result may be attributed to the challenging
nature of the competition and their team dynamics. The study concluded with the
statement that if anxiety goes high motivation level goes low or vice-versa.
